Industrial gearboxes (or reducers), as core components of mechanical transmission systems, are widely used in various material handling systems. Conveying equipment typically must withstand heavy loads, operate continuously for long periods, and often face harsh working environments.

 

The following are the main application scenarios of industrial reducers in the conveying field and the specific performance requirements for reducers.

1. Main Application Scenarios in Conveying

 

1.1 Belt Conveyors

- Application: widely used in mines, ports, power plants, steel mills, etc., for long-distance, high-volume transportation of bulk materials such as coal, ore, and grain.

- Commonly used reducers: HB series heavy-duty industrial gear units, bevel-helical gear reducers (which allow vertical shaft arrangement to save space).

 

1.2 Bucket Elevators

- Application: used for vertical or steep-angle upward conveying of bulk materials (e.g., cement, gravel, grain).

- Commonly used reducers: dedicated elevator gearboxes equipped with backstops (such as TA type or customized HB series), often with an auxiliary drive for maintenance convenience.

 

1.3 Screw Conveyors

- Application: used for short-distance, enclosed conveying of powdery, granular, or small-lump materials (e.g., chemical raw materials, flour).

- Commonly used reducers: DXG series shaft-mounted reducers or helical gear reducers, which mount directly onto the shaft for a compact structure.

 

1.4 Chain/Scraper Conveyors

- Application: mostly used in metallurgy, mining (e.g., underground coal mining faces), and heavy manufacturing assembly lines, conveying heavy or abrasive materials.

- Commonly used reducers: heavy-duty, impact-resistant planetary gear reducers or hardened-tooth helical gear units.

 

2. Core Requirements for Reducers in the Conveying Industry

The continuity of material conveying and the diversity of operating environments impose very stringent requirements on reducers.

 

2.1 High Reliability and Long Fatigue Life

- Requirement: if a conveying system stops, the entire production line or port loading/unloading operation is paralyzed. Therefore, reducers must have high load capacity, and the fatigue life of gears and bearings (typically requiring L10 life of tens of thousands of hours or more) must be excellent.

 

2.2 High Starting Torque and Impact Resistance

- Requirement: conveyors often start under heavy load (i.e., starting directly with material on the belt), requiring extremely high torque. The reducer must be able to withstand instantaneous overload shocks without shaft breakage or tooth damage.

 

2.3 Strict Backstop Safety

- Requirement: for steeply inclined belt conveyors and bucket elevators, reverse movement (sliding back) of material is absolutely prohibited.

- Technical solution: the reducer must be equipped with a reliable mechanical backstop. When the motor loses power, the backstop instantly locks the shaft to prevent material backflow and avoid serious accidents.

 

2.4 Environmental Adaptability and High Ingress Protection

- Conveying environments are often harsh, with differentiated requirements:

  - Dust and water resistance: in mines and cement plants, dust levels are extremely high. Reducers need labyrinth seals or double-lip oil seals, and the protection rating is typically required to be IP65 or higher to prevent dust ingress and gear wear.

  - Corrosion resistance: ports have salt spray, and chemical plants have acids and alkalis. Housings must have high-grade anti-corrosion coatings (e.g., C4 or C5 industrial corrosion protection standards).

 

2.5 Excellent Thermal Performance

- Requirement: during long-distance heavy-load conveying, continuous operation generates significant heat. If the thermal balance capacity is insufficient, high oil temperature will cause lubrication failure.

- Technical solution: usually require additional cooling fans, cooling coils, or a separate forced oil circulation cooling system.

 

2.6 Modular Design and Easy Maintainability

- Requirement: to shorten downtime for maintenance, reducers should have a modular design.

- Technical solution: support multiple mounting arrangements (foot, flange, shaft-mounted), and be equipped with inspection windows (for checking gear wear), convenient oil drain valves, and oil level gauges.
